Mars Recalls Snickers and Other Candy Bars in 55 Countries

Snickers do sometimes satisfy but if you're traveling abroad you may want to opt for a candy bar that is not made by Mars. The company this week announced an international recall spanning 55 countries after a customer in Germany found a piece of plastic in a Snickers bar.

The company traced the plastic back to a factory in the Netherlands "where it was determined that the piece came from a protective cover used in the manufacturing process," reports The Guardian. Mars did not report any injuries but said it was recalling products as a precautionary measure.

55 Countries, Multiple Products

Candy fans brace yourselves, the recall affects many products sold around the world, including Mars, Milky Way, Snickers, Celebrations and Mini Mix, according to a statement by the company. But the good news is that Mars has not extended this recall to the US, although it may yet.

A Mars Netherlands spokeswoman told reporters, "We cannot be sure that this plastic was only in that particular Snickers. We do not want any products on the market that may not meet our quality requirements, so we decided to take them all back." The company is continuing its investigation and stated that most of the recalled candy bars would come from European countries, as well as Sri Lanka and Vietnam.

The Cost to Mars

Alicia Forry, a consumer good analyst at Canaccord Genuity, said Mars could lose up to $2.5m of sales over the next few months as a result of the recall. She predicted that competitors like Nestle -- which makes KitKats -- will benefit from the bad news for Mars, particularly ahead of Easter. "It is not great timing for Mars," she said.
