A woman was found dead in a San Diego college bathroom earlier this week. The body of a 19 year-old women, believed to be Nancy Gonzalez, was discovered by a student in the men's restroom at a downtown location of San Diego community college. The woman was reported missing after she failed to meet her family following a night class she was taking at the college. At the time of her death, she was taking general education classes to ultimately become a nurse.

MSNBC.com reports that, although the cause of death has not yet been disclosed, the woman was a victim of domestic violence and had a restraining order pending against her 37 year-old husband, Armando Gabriel Perez. The restraining order accused Perez of kidnapping Nancy from her campus and repeatedly assaulting her while holding her captive in a motel room for several days. The couple had a 9 month old daughter together. It is now believed that Perez may have fled to Mexico.

Following the initial incident, Perez was briefly jailed for four days, but no formal charges were filed. MSNBC.com quotes Nancy's mother, Concepcion Gonzalez, "We did so much and nothing happened. They just kept saying, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I said, are were supposed to wait for him to kill her."

A protective order and restraining order are two forms of civil orders that a victim of domestic violence can seek for themselves and their families. The tragic death in San Diego illuminates the problem with protective orders. While in many cases a protective order against a domestic violence offender can serve as a deterrent for future violence, it can also serve to intensify the anger or rage of the individual. The bottom line is that there are simply not enough resources for the legal system to offer perfect protection. At this point, Armando Gabriel Perez is classified as a "person of interest" that investigating police are very interested in locating.
