What Should In-House Lawyers Read? (Besides FindLaw)

After I fire up my computer every morning, I have some special alone time with my RSS feeds and my cup of coffee. I get oriented by reading about what's going on in the world (being in California means the rest of the country has already been awake for two to three hours, so a lot has happened).

In-house counsel need to stay up to date, as well. So what should you be reading (in addition to FindLaw's In House, of course)? Here are some of our favorite sites for GCs.

New York Times DealBook

DealBook will be there to report on any obscure acquisition by any company, as well as criminal investigations, IPOs, and other business-world gossip.

Inside Counsel

It's all in the name, isn't it? Inside Counsel reports exclusively on things that matter to GCs, and its columnists extract the in-house angle from news stories around the Internet.

CIO

"Wait a minute, I'm in the legal department, not the IT department!" That might be true, but you both have more in common than you think. Government compliance? Security? Cost savings in a department that isn't a profit center? Yeah, you could learn a lot from each other; reading CIO will give you some insight into the common issues that both departments face.

The Wall Street Journal Law Blog

Is it possible that WSJ is the only major newspaper that has a legal blog section? Yes, it is. WSJ's Law Blog is an invaluable source of legal news, both business-related and just otherwise legally related.

Patently-O

Looking for a one-stop-shop for patent litigation news? Patently-O, authored by two IP law professors, provides information on current patent litigation, as well as academic investigations into some of the underpinnings of patent law and how it's changing.

Above the Law

Even though ATL's tone is Law Blog combined with TMZ, it's still a treasure trove of information. If you want to skip the gossip, ATL usually features regular columns from in-house lawyers writing on things that matter to GCs.

Workplace Prof Blog

NLRB, EEOC, FLSA -- corporate legal life is surrounded by labor acronyms. Enter Workplace Prof Blog, part of the Law Professor Blogs Network, which reports on labor law issues from an academic perspective.

Corporate Counsel

Kind of like Inside Counsel, this blog reports on news that's relevant to the legal department and also finds a way to put a GC spin on news that isn't strictly relevant to in-house lawyers.
