Tips to Overcome Stress at the Office

You have a big corporate job, responsible for millions of dollars and accountable to thousands of shareholders. But it's hard to breathe at the top because the air is thin and the pressure is intense.

Or maybe your job is not so big, still you feel stressed as you put out the fires of even a small business. Life is hard on the street, too.

Well it won't get any easier if you have a headache, get sick or simply burn out. So relax, have a seat, and take your shoes off. Here are some tips to help you de-stress:

1. Improve Your Outlook

Whatever your view of the world -- from the corner office or the basement cubicle -- it's better than you think. You have a paying gig, at least.

Just take a little a time to improve your outlook. Hang a picture of something that inspires you. Update your screensaver with some artwork. Start a playlist to set a tone that suits you.

"You may not drive a great big Cadillac," as Curtis Mayfield once crooned, but you can still "just be thankful for what you got."

2. Break From Routines

Taking a break is like meditation. Both can help you escape from the deadening routines of life.

In hourly jobs, you are entitled to breaks by law. But in a high-stress job, your health demands it.

If you don't have time for a full-on meditation or nap, try standing up, walking to the water cooler or stepping outside. It's about modulating stress levels.

3. Get Out of the Office

Literally, leave. Lunch appointments count, but use them to explore.

Go to different places, and walk if possible. If you can squeeze in a trip to the gym, you will live longer. Physical exercise is one of the best ways to combat stress.
