Eighth Circuit Announces Bankruptcy Judge Vacancy in Missouri

The Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals is looking to fill a vacancy for Bankruptcy Judge, according to an announcement on the Court's website. Specifically, the court is looking for candidates to apply for the position of Federal Bankruptcy Judge for the Western District of Missouri.

The position starts in January 2013, but applications are being accepted now. The judgeship is for a 14-year term. Interestingly, you don't have to be a bankruptcy attorney to apply for this position. While that will likely play a role in the selection process, the criteria don't limit the judgeship to bankruptcy lawyers or attorneys from a particular circuit.

The salary for the position is $160,080.

In order to qualify for this judgeship, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be a member in good standing of any state bar of the United States, or a member in good standing of the D.C. bar or the bar of Puerto Rico.
  2. Have practiced law for at least five years.
  3. Have a good reputation in the practice of law, have sound mental and moral character and a demonstrated commitment to equal justice under the law.
  4. Not be related by blood to any current judge of the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, any district judge within the Eighth Circuit or any member of the Eighth Circuit Judicial Council.

Successful candidates will be subject to a background check, including a check by the FBI and the IRS.
