The 10 Most Stolen Cars in America
Year after year, the 1994 Honda Accord tops the most stolen car lists.
This is no mere coincidence as the popular car is still commonly seen on the streets and its parts are in high demand, reports NBC.
In fact, if the top ten most stolen cars list is any indicator, car thieves are motivated by practicality and parts and not the sexiness of the car itself. You'll see a lot Hondas and Fords on the list, but no Ferraris, BMWs, or Porsches.
The top most stolen car list as compiled by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) consists of:
- 1994 Honda Accord
- 1998 Honda Civic
- 2006 Ford F-Series
- 1991 Toyota Camry
- 2000 Dodge Caravan
- 1994 Acura Integra
- 1999 Chevrolet Silverado
- 2004 Dodge Ram
- 2002 Ford Explorer
- 1994 Nissan Sentra
As you can tell, not exactly a dream list for car enthusiasts debunking the idea that only drooled-after cars are targeted by thieves.
However, just because the list is primarily made up of older model cars, the NICB also reports that newer model cars are being stolen at increased levels. This statistic is surprising as many new cars are built with anti-theft technology and smart keys made to thwart thieves.
The NICB believes that thieves are getting smarter and many thefts are now inside jobs of stolen codes and technology as opposed to merely breaking into a car and hot wiring it, reports NBC.
Even if you don't see your car on the most stolen cars list, you should take precautions and use some common sense. For example, one of the most common reasons victims state for stolen cars is the fact that they left the doors unlocked or left the keys inside the car, reports NBC.
