Spitting Saudi Woman Charged with Hate Crime
Walmart may be world-renowned for its discounted toiletries and cheap toys, but its location in Palm Bay, Florida has a new import:
A spitting Saudi woman.
After hocking a loogie at one too many "pushy Americans," Nuha Mohammed Al-Doaifi is being charged with a hate crime.
Over the weekend, police arrested the Saudia Arabian student after she spat on a Walmart customer who told her she was going in the wrong door, reports the Orlando Sentinel.
After attempting to spit on another customer, the paper reports that the spitting Saudi woman told police that "Americans are pushing us around" and that she was spitting on "white people" because of the way they treat "her people."
Did I mention that Nuha Mohammed Al-Doaifi was with her 15-month-old son? And had spat on a professor a few weeks prior?
While ordinarily, spitting on another person amounts to misdemeanor battery, Al-Doaifi's statements have elevated her charges to a hate crime, which WESH-TV reports is a felony.
There may be some confusion about how a Saudi woman could be charged with a hate crime against white people, or Americans.
Hate crime statutes, though originally enacted to protect minority groups, protect victims regardless of the color of their skin. As long as the crime was motivated by a characteristic set out in the statute (race, ethnicity, religion, etc.), it is immaterial whether the victim was white or black, or Christian or Sikh.
In other words, it wasn't a great idea for the newly-dubbed spitting Saudi woman to tell police that she hates Americans.
