R&B Singer Angie Stone Arrested for Alleged Assault on Daughter
R&B singer Angie Stone has been arrested and charged with aggravated domestic assault after an altercation with her daughter.
Stone, whose real name is Angela Brown, was arrested Monday after a fight with her daughter Diamond Stone. The two women were allegedly arguing over Diamond's kids running around the house when the fight broke out. Diamond claimed Angie hit her in the face with a metal stand, knocking out some teeth; both women were taken to the police station. Diamond was released, but Angie was booked and charged with felony aggravated domestic assault.
What is aggravated domestic assault, and what could happen to this angry mom?
Aggravated Assault
Georgia's statute on aggravated assault states, "A person commits the offense of aggravated assault when he or she assaults with a deadly weapon or with any object ... which, when used offensively against a person, is likely to or actually does result in serious bodily injury."
The first thing that may come to mind when you hear "deadly weapon" might be a knife or a gun. However, something as innocent and fluffy as a pillow could also be a deadly weapon if it causes serious bodily injury to the victim. In this case, Angie is accused of hitting Diamond with a metal stand, knocking out several of Diamond's front teeth.
Unless Angie can prove that she didn't hit Diamond at all or can claim self-defense, it looks like Angie could be singing the blues from behind bars.
Possible Penalties
In Georgia, a conviction for aggravated assault can get you up to 20 years in prison. However, the punishment can be enhanced if the aggravated assault is between a parent and child. Since Angie was charged with domestic aggravated assault, she could potentially be sentenced to a minimum of three years and a maximum of 20 years.
The case is still pending, and it will be interesting to see what Angie Stone has to say in her defense. Stone was released from jail Tuesday on $10,000 bond.
