Randy Travis Gets Probation for Naked DWI Incident

Randy Travis has received probation for crashing his Pontiac Trans Am while driving naked and drunk.

The country singer pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated and received two years of probation, a $2,000 fine, and a 180-day suspended jail sentence, reports The Associated Press.

What this means is that for the next two years, Travis will have a 180-day jail sentence hanging over him should he violate the terms of his probation.

The bizarre incident happened in Texas last summer. Authorities say that Travis drove his Pontiac off the road in the town of Tioga, about 60 miles north of Dallas, where he struck several barricades in a construction zone, according to the AP.

By the time authorities arrived, it was reported that Travis was lying naked in the roadway. The 53-year-old country singer registered a blood alcohol level of 0.21%. The legal limit to drive in Texas is 0.08%.

Travis faced a misdemeanor charge and could have been sentenced to jail for up to one year.

But as is the case in most DWI cases, Travis entered a plea deal and only received a suspended sentence for half that amount of time. Given the probation and suspended sentence, you may be wondering under what circumstances Travis may be ordered to jail.

Judges typically have discretion to set the terms of probation as they see fit. In Travis' case, the singer was ordered to spend at least 30 days at an alcohol treatment facility where he will be unable to leave. He'll also have to complete 100 hours of community service and install an ignition interlock device in any vehicle he operates, the AP reports. So should he fail any of these conditions, he will be ordered back to jail.

It's notable that Travis had also faced a retaliation charge for his alleged belligerent activity towards the cops. But as part of the plea deal, that charge was dropped.
