'Plant a Seed, Grow a Future' -- Take Your Kids to Work
You may have left the confines of a law firm but you are still a member of a team -- and this week is a big week for corporate teams. Wednesday is Administrative Professionals Day. You forgot? No problem, we've got some tips for your here (just whatever you do, don't delegate gift purchasing to your admin).
Now that your admin is covered, now you've got to deal with the kids. Yes, kids. Thursday is Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day, and in the spirit of nurturing our future leaders, you should participate.
This year's theme is "Plant a Seed, Grow a Future," and since you work at a corporation, rather than a law firm, you are in the unique position to give your child an inside look at how a company runs. Sure, you can limit your child to the legal department, but there's a whole company to see!
Don't wait until the last minute; here are a few things to give your child a well-rounded learning experience.
1. Coordinate With Other Departments
Sure, kids (at least while they are young) want to emulate their moms and dads, but that doesn't mean you should limit their visit to the law department. Try to coordinate with other departments to make the day more informative. Try the marketing, accounting, research and development, and IT departments to start. You can set up a tour (see below) or have a representative from each department come and speak about what they do.
2. Tour of the Company
Bring the Human Resources department in -- maybe if they don't have a plan in place yet you can gently nudge them to coordinate an event. Try to facilitate a tour of the company so your kids can see what the company does, and see the other departments in action.
3. Inter-Departmental Breakfast or Lunch
Speaking of ... there's no better way to facilitate dialogue than with food. Why not have an inter-departmental lunch where kids can pick the brains of people in other departments, or of people in the legal department?
4. Plan for Next Year
You can definitely get something together quickly, but if you really want to make Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day a company-wide effort, form a committee with the help of the Human Resources department and start planning.
