OnStar Technology Leads to Accused Murderer's Arrest

Thanks to GPS communications systems and Onstar technology police have arrested Bryan Ashline, a young father, in connection to a double homicide in the Village of Bath New York.

Bryan Ashline, 23, was arrested on Father's Day and is a suspect in the slaying of a 25-year-old woman and their 3-month-old son, the Daily Star reports.

Police converged on the rest area of Interstate 88 shortly after an OnStar technology signal from a 2010 Chevrolet Impala driven by the murder suspect was detected, Sgt. Gary Leahy of Troop C said.

Authorities responded to a 911 call as Ashline was driving a car borrowed from a family member.

OnStar technology is a GPS and communications system available on General Motors vehicles. The system has the ability to locate an OnStar equipped vehicle using satellite-based GPS technology.

Police found the bodies of the woman and infant in the village where Clayton lived.

Bryan Ashline is being held on two counts of second-degree murder.

In general, second-degree murder is ordinarily defined as:

  • an intentional killing that is not premeditated or planned, nor committed in a reasonable "heat of passion" or
  • a killing caused by dangerous conduct and the offender's obvious lack of concern for human life. Second-degree murder may best be viewed as the middle ground between first-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter.

Although police did not know the relationship between Ashline and the woman, he is believed to be the father of Xavier Ashline. An order of protection against Ashline was issued in November 2009.

In this case, technology was the key in the timely location of the suspect, police said.
