The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that approximately 48 million people do not wear seat belts when traveling in motor vehicle. In 2004, the majority of passenger vehicle occupants killed in motor vehicle crashes were not wearing seatbelts. The proportion of those fatalities was higher among males, on rural roadways, in pickup trucks and SUV’s, in single-vehicle crashes, and in the age group of 8 to 44 years old.
