Need Inspiration, Entrepreneurs? Go to the Movies
Quint, the ill-fated captain of "Jaws," was a family man in real life.
The actor had 10 kids and bills to pay, but he took a pay cut for the movie because he believed in Steven Spielberg's vision. It was the young director's second feature film.
The risk paid off, and "Jaws" went on to become a classic. Film buffs and entrepreneurs know the story.
Risk v. Reward
Rob Kolar, a Los Angeles businessman and performer, knows it well. His grandfather, actor Robert Shaw, played Quint.
Kolar told Forbes that his grandfather took a "huge" pay cut so the film could get finished. It inspired Kolar, who has learned it takes risks to succeed in business.
"For entrepreneurs, risks are essential to success," he said. "If you can approach risk without fear and be guided by your instinct, risk can become less of a risk and more a brave choice that can propel you towards reaching your goal."
Overcoming the Monster, Rags to Riches, Voyage and Return. These are common movie plots, and they can also inspire entrepreneurs to succeed.
Rags to Riches
Many entrepreneurs identify with a rags-to-riches story. They want it to be their story, too.
Slumdog Millionaire, Forrest Grump, and The Social Network say it all. A little luck, serendipity, or a good idea can make a fortune.
Some movies may inspire dark business motives like greed, deceit, and excess. But Goodfellas, Catch Me If You Can, and the Wolf of Wall Street are still entertaining.
