Nat'l Comic Book Day: Lawyer Comics and Coloring Books

Today is National Comic Book Day! What do lawyers have to do with comic books?

There are lawyers as comic book characters, because who better to don a mask and crusade than a lawyer with an over-inflated ego and sense of purpose? Seriously, Matlock and Jack McCoy are the same archetype as Bruce Wayne, just with more age, more education, and less money.

And then there are the legal issues that arise in comics: premises liability, lawyer-superheroes' duties to clients, good Samaritan laws, and more.

Lawyers as Superheroes

We all know about Daredevil, the blind lawyer superhero portrayed (poorly) by Ben Affleck in the movies. (Fun fact: The series is getting its own reboot as a Netflix series.) But there are many other interesting comic book characters who are lawyers by day, including:

  • She-Hulk (she got her own lawyer-comic book series reboot that debuted earlier this year);
  • Two-Face (Harvey Dent from the "Batman" comics, television series, and movies); and
  • Shadowhawk (the first HIV-positive comic book character, who is a district attorney and superhero).

The ABA Journal has a slideshow of lawyer-characters, including the first female lawyer in a comic book and a time-displaced-lawyer-turned-bounty-hunter guy.

Law and the Multiverse

We could never do what these guys do: over-analyze legal issues found in comics and comic book movies. After all, we have enough trouble doing exactly that with bad television (see our reviews of "The Good Wife").

Kidding aside, much respect to the guys at Law and the Multiverse: Their use of comics as a tool to illustrate legal concepts is absolutely brilliant.

Lawyers Coloring Book

OK, so coloring books aren't exactly comic books, but they both have pictures and stuff. Plus, this is a really good excuse to pass along the "Lawyer's Coloring Book" to y'all -- a hilarious PDF that has been circulating via email chain letters and blog mentions since at least 2006.
