Man's DUI Alibi: Aliens Dumped Him at Crash Site

A DUI suspect in Georgia insists that he couldn't possibly have been driving drunk. Instead, he claims aliens dumped him near the site of an alleged DUI crash.

Alas, sheriff's deputies did not find any little green men to confirm Joel Lankford's story, so he was charged with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident.

What actually happened, and could extraterrestrials have been involved?

Investigators in Walton County, Georgia, being much more down-to-earth, aren't entertaining Lankford's out-of-this-world alibi.

Before Lankford's DUI arrest, deputies had responded to a 911 call from a woman who was bleeding profusely in a church parking lot, reports The Huffington Post. Not far away, they found an abandoned vehicle in a ditch. The engine was still running, the wheels were still spinning, and the two front doors had been left open.

About the same time, a nearby homeowner called to report a prowler. When deputies responded, the alleged trespasser identified himself as Joel Lankford. That happened to match a name found on the injured woman's cell phone.

Lankford reeked of alcohol and his speech was slurred, deputies say. But they were still able to understand his explanation for how he arrived at the home in rural Georgia: Aliens had brought him there.

True, aliens have been blamed for a variety of things -- creating the world, building the pyramids, and even carving out a few crop circles here and there. This may be the first time that aliens have been blamed for a drunken driving crash.

But maybe Joel Lankford was on to something.

In most states, it is illegal to drive with a blood alcohol level above 0.08% or to otherwise drive while impaired. However, it is a defense in many states if you involuntarily drink or are forced to drive while impaired.

If Lankford can prove that aliens forcibly got him drunk, perhaps as part of an experiment on humans, then he could potentially beat his charges. But it remains to be seen if a judge, or any other earthling, will buy Lankford's alien DUI defense.
