Man Steals 5-Ton Glacier for Designer Ice Cubes

Ice ice baby. Glacier ice ice baby.

That's all a Chilean man wanted this week when he drove down to the country's Patagonia region. But his trip ended early when police tossed him behind bars.

He's accused of stealing approximately 5 tons of glacier. The Jorge Montt glacier, that is.

Yeah, guy's a bona fide glacier thief. And probably proud of it, too.

He allegedly planned to sell the stolen glacier to upscale bars in the capital city of Santiago, reports the Guardian. From there, it would be turned into at least $6,000 worth of designer ice cubes.

There's no proof that such a market actually exists.

Well, at least according to the Christian Science Monitor. But this blogger thinks otherwise. Why else would anyone go to the trouble of stealing glacier ice? And from the Jorge Montt glacier, nonetheless.

The glacier thief had to drive to the southern part of Chile; make his way through a small coastal village without roads; and then sit through a four-hour boat ride.

There's no other way to visit the glacier.

If the glacier thief didn't plan on a big payout, then he must be crazy. Because, you know, it's only crazy to steal a glacier when it's not worth your time or money.

Anyway, the unnamed glacier thief has been charged with theft because he technically took the ice from a national park without prior permission. Chilean police are also considering a charge under the National Monuments Act, which is designed to protect the country's heritage sites.
