Kelsey Grammer Files for Sole Custody of Children

Paging Dr. Frasier, an emergency counseling session seems to be in order. Former Frasier star Kelsey Grammar is now embroiled in a bitter custody battle with ex-wife Camille Grammer.

Kelsey is seeking sole physical custody and joint legal custody of their two children, ages 9 and 6. He filed the legal papers at Los Angeles County Superior Court this week.

Camille is no stranger to the small screen herself as a star on the reality TV series the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. The couple was married for 13 years, but separated last year.

Kelsey, ever the romantic, remarried 16 days after their divorce was finalized.

In child custody cases, "physical custody" refers to who the child will live with most of the time. If Kelsey is awarded physical custody of his children, they might have to relocate depending on where Kelsey chooses to reside with his new wife.

"Legal custody" is a different entity altogether. If the two share legal custody of their children, they will both be able to share the rights to exercise decisions over their children such as which school to enroll them in, and important healthcare decisions.

To determine who will get the physical custody of the child, the court will have to analyze a variety of different factors. If the child is old enough to have a preference, the court will consider the child's preference when making its decision. Other factors that the court may consider include who the primary caretaker for the children is, and the child's interest in staying in the same community and being able to attend the same school.

The main goal of the child custody suit is to make sure that the child's interests are taken care of. Courts are also more inclined to keep siblings together.

Kelsey Grammer and Camille Grammer might be divvying up the custody rights to their children soon. One can only hope the two young children come through this messy proceeding with as little emotional trauma as possible.
