Keeping Up With Kris, Bruce Jenner's Separation

Kris and Bruce Jenner have finally confirmed one big rumor regarding their relationship -- the couple has been separated for a year now. However, Kris Jenner claims, according to an interview with US magazine, that there is no animosity between the two, the Associated Press reports.

The "Keeping up with the Kardashians" couple had been together for 22 years, and now they are living apart. However, no divorce papers have been filed, nor is this even a legal separation.

While one question has been answered, many legal ones still remain. Here are some legal tidbits about the Jenners' separation that you may not know:

  • Legal separation vs. separation. An informal separation is actually different from a legal separation. Sources have not characterized the couple's parting as a legal separation, and the Jenners so far have only referred to their situation as living apart or a separation. A legal separation involves a more formalized process -- many times with a court dealing with division of shared property.
  • Living apart. While no legal separation or impending divorce has been confirmed, Bruce is definitely no longer living with Kris. This is not only a common option for married couples looking to informally separate to work out their issues, but even a trend among happily married couples who want to keep their respective apartments and relationships fresh.
  • Residency requirements. If the Jenners do ultimately decide to divorce, what state will it be in and will they qualify? Because Bruce and Kris are living apart, in separate houses, in the same state, they fulfill California's residency requirements of having lived in the state for at least 6 months.
  • Date of separation? Since the Jenners have not legally separated, what would their formal date of separation be if they did decide to divorce? A date of separation helps the family court to determine valuation dates and various property interests for a divorce. This varies by state, but generally, if there has been an informal separation, a court will look at a broad range of factors. This includes: the date one person moved out, other signs of a permanent split, or the date that the couple decided to informally part ways.

This news also comes on the heels of reports that Kris' daughter, Khloe, may or may not be divorcing husband Lamar Odom soon.
