Justice Elena Kagan Goes Antelope Hunting with Scalia
Justice Elena Kagan had a lot to say in a presentation at the University of Tennessee on Friday, but the part everyone paid attention to was when she mentioned going hunting with Scalia.
During the talk on her life both in and out of the courtroom, Kagan mentioned that she has gone hunting with fellow Justice Antonin Scalia. She also admitted to plans to go hunting in Wyoming for big game with the hopes of bagging an antelope, much to the chagrin of some liberals.
Besides establishing herself as a hunting enthusiast, Kagan also had some interesting things to say about being a woman on the court and a few tidbits to share about herself.
Instead of focusing on politics and cases, Kagan talked about herself and her journey to becoming a Supreme Court justice. Some of it was serious but other bits were just funny.
Aside from her newfound interest in hunting, Kagan also shared her enthusiasm for comic book heroes, reports the ABA Journal. Lest you think she's too 'intellectual' and 'inaccessible,' Kagan mentioned her love for American Top-40 music. We wonder if she misses Casey Kasem too.
In terms of her career, Kagan noted that working as Solicitor General prepared her to serve as a justice although she only appeared before the Court once.
Prior to sitting behind the bench, Kagan argued the Citizen's United case on behalf of the United States, reports the The Daily Beacon.
During the interview-style event Kagan also praised her predecessors on the court, Justices Sandra Day O'Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsberg as pioneers on the court. While she admitted that women still have struggles in law that men don't, it's much less than what earlier women dealt with.
She also mentioned the possibility that she might not have been nominated if gender equality wasn't still an important issue on the court. But in the courtroom the issue is law, not gender.
