Judge Rules Part of Defense of Marriage Act Unconstitutional

A federal district court judge in Massachusetts has ruled that Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act, which limits the definition of marriage to heterosexual unions for purposes of federal law, violated the equal protection rights of homosexual married couples by denying them access to marriage-based federal benefits.
