Jeff Sessions Resigns as U.S. Attorney General

"Since the day I was sworn in as Attorney General of the United States," Jefferson Sessions wrote to President Donald Trump, "I came to work at the Justice Department every day determined to do my duty and serve my country." But that service has come to an end, according to his resignation letter, apparently at Trump's request.

Honor and Opportunity

The move, coming a day after the midterm elections that saw Democrats re-take control of the House, was not unexpected. Trump has long been expressing his dissatisfaction with Sessions, especially relating to the investigation into Russian meddling with the 2016 presidential election. Rumors have it that Sessions offered to resign at least once already, but Trump refused to accept it. This appears to be a final severing of that relationship.

"I have been honored to serve as Attorney General and have worked to implement the law enforcement agenda based on the rule of law that formed a central part of your campaign for the Presidency," Sessions concluded. "Thank you for the opportunity, Mr. President."
