'How to Get Away With Murder' Review: Season 2, Episode 14: Confessions
So much for the secret keeping. After scheming, conniving, and straight up killing to keep their bad deeds hidden, everything started spilling out in last night's episode of How to Get Away With Murder: Wes's origin story, Annalise's bummer of a pregnancy, even Frank's back story. Of course, the confessing was helped along by a bottle or three of Annalise's luke-warm vodka.
Here's your lawyer's guide to last night's very revealing Hot to Get Away With Murder episode.
There's a Killer Albino on the Loose
Last week, HTGAWM ended with Annalise being dragged across the floor by Phillip Hapcest. She gets away, of course, and Phillip's sad "please stop struggling" during their encounter makes it seem like this rejected albino product of incest might not be as bad as everyone thinks. I mean, how can you not sympathize with someone so roundly rejected by the world?
Anyway, Phillip soon goes away, the kids are called into the A.D.A.'s for questioning, and life goes on in the usual, very dysfunctional HTGAWM way. Caleb has gone missing and Annalise has gone back to sucking down bottles of room temperature vodka.
(Annalise, please, have some self respect and drop an ice cube in there.)
The Keating Five are, of course, under some stress. Thankfully, Bonnie is there to give them a pep talk. "We're all bad people. That's the only thing we have in common," she yells. It doesn't exactly work.
Seconds later, infused with some fresh Stoli, Annalise storms out of her office and finally kicks the kids out. All the kids besides Wes, that is. It's confession time.
The Origins of Westophe
Alone with Wes, Annalise lets it all spill out. We know much of it already -- Annalise, after pressuring Wes's mother to testify for billionaire Wallace Mahoney's son, watched Rose commit suicide. Now Wes knows too. But there's more.
After Rose's death, Annalise is on her way to tell investigators that Rose had been threatened by the Mahoney family when she's sideswiped by a speeding truck.
So now we know what happened to her pregnancy. The crash killed the child and, as Sam rushes to her side, we watch her holding the swaddled, lifeless infant in a hospital bed. "I did this to him," she sobs. It is not a happy scene.
But still, there's more! Wes let's Annalise know that he's not buying her sad tale. Why should he believe her now when all she's done is lied and manipulated? (Fair enough point, Wes.)
Annalise, as always, says she was just seeking to protect Wes. But from what? Now we know.
Rose didn't kill herself because of Annalise's pressure alone. She was terrified of Wallace Mahoney and Annalise knows why. Confronting him after Rose's death, Annalise declares, "You raped her! For how many years? And then came that boy, your son, Christophe."
So there you go. And you thought Wes's story couldn't have been sadder.
A Footnote on Frank
That wasn't the only confession of the night, though. Remember, two episodes ago, Frank admitted to Laurel that he'd killed Lila. Last episode, Bonnie overheard (and recorded) the two discussing it. Last night, Bonnie finally confronted her co-lackey.
Except, it seems, Bonnie and Frank might not have been serving the same master. In a flashback, we see Annalise chewing out Frank, saying that she only brings him along to please Sam, her husband. Saving Frank from his "white trash future" was Sam's doing, not hers.
That, Bonnie realizes, is why Frank killed Lila. Frank was protecting Sam, not Annalise. And just as Bonnie warns that Annalise can never know, a drunk Laurel shows up at her door, letting the whole thing out.
Now, with so many secrets out in the open, Annalise packs her bags and runs home to her mother. Maybe she'll find some absolution there, but we doubt it.
