How to Break Out of an In-House Rut

The problem with being in a rut is it's hard to get out.

If you try to turn one way or another, the rut pulls you back in. You're stuck going the same old direction.

When it happens at work, you have some options. You don't have to stay stuck.

Get Out

It's not as easy as it sounds, but you can quit. Just leave that rut behind and try something new.

Lawyers do it all the time. It's practically part of the plan: work just long enough so you can get out.

But then there are many die-hard attorneys who want to die that way. Quitting is not an option.

Start Over

You don't have to get out of law to start over. Another option is to try something different within the profession.

For in-house attorneys, try a new company. Go to an outside firm. Go to a networking group. Any of these courses can get you out of the doldrums.

It's that change of direction -- the variety spice -- that can give you a new lease on life.

Get a Life

Life should never be just about work. If it has become that way, then you are definitely in a rut.

It's time to get some work-life balance. Maybe a vacation or a sabbatical will do it. Make time for family, sports, music, or other hobby interests.

And when you do go back to the office, try a different route. That road less traveled can make all the difference.
