Home Burglary Video on Reddit Leads to 2 Arrests

Reddit user Elizabeth Robinson uploaded video footage of a burglary at her house in the hopes of finding the people responsible for ruining her vacation.

Before going on a Christmas trip, Robinson and her husband set up eight cameras to keep an eye on their dog. But while checking in one day, they saw something no homeowner ever wants to see: their own home being burglarized.

The break-in happened Dec. 29, and Robinson posted the video to Reddit on Jan. 2 under the title "Watch my house getting robbed." By the next day, police had arrested one suspect and the next day another young man was cuffed for the crime.

So was it luck, or did the video help?

Well, posting on Reddit may not have been key to the suspects' capture, but the video clips were certainly a big help. Local police used still images from the video to locate potential suspects, reports The Huffington Post.

Officers used the footage to identify Qushawn Newsome, 17, who has been charged with second-degree burglary and larceny. Kadarius Newsome, 20, was also arrested as an accomplice to the crime.

The two men, along with a third unidentified accomplice, allegedly ransacked the Robinsons' home and stole $1,500 in cash and electronics. That included an Xbox, a Wii, video games, an iPod, and a router, reports Raleigh, North Carolina's WRAL-TV.

The most amusing fact about the burglary is that while the criminals noticed one camera, that didn't stop them.

Apparently it didn't occur to them that people who set up one camera are likely to have more hidden around. Instead, the burglars disabled the camera they found and continued with their theft spree.

The arrests won't necessarily bring back the stolen items, but at least it will give the Robinsons some peace of mind. For those who doubt the power of surveillance cameras when you leave town, maybe now you'll think again.
