Grammy Winner Lynn Anderson Arrested For DUI After Crash

Grammy-winning country singer Lynn Anderson was arrested Friday in Nashville and charged with DUI following an early morning crash.

Police say that Anderson, who won a Grammy in 1970 for the song "(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden," admitted to drinking alcohol and taking prescription medication before the crash, reports Nashville's WSMV-TV.

Unfortunately for Anderson, this isn't her first time facing DUI charges.

Anderson Has Previous Arrests for DUI

Anderson may be facing stiff punishment if convicted of driving under the influence due to her previous arrests for DUI. According to the Albuquerque Journal, Anderson was arrested for DUI in 2006 after read-ending another vehicle.

18 months earlier, Anderson had been arrested and convicted of DUI in Texas after passing out in her car on the shoulder of the highway.

Felony DUI

In many states, prior conviction for DUI can result in subsequent DUIs being charged as felony DUI. Under Tennessee DUI law, a fourth DUI conviction within ten years is charged as a felony. But even second and third DUI convictions can have dramatically increased criminal penalties. On a second DUI conviction, Tennessee law requires a minimum of 45 days in county jail, as opposed to 48 hours for a first time offender.

The fact that Anderson's prior DUI conviction occurred in a different state will not affect its ability to act as a prior offense. Tennessee like many states recognizes DUI convictions from other states as prior convictions for purposes of their own DUI laws.

Anderson is free on $5,000 bond, and released a statement this morning on Facebook, apologizing for her actions and stating she is "committed to the accountable steps that I will be facing on the road to recovery."
