George Zimmerman Shot In Face

Noted Florida resident, serial domestic abuser, firearm enthusiast, and neighborhood watcher George Zimmerman was apparently shot in the face during a road rage incident in Lake Mary. According to authorities, Zimmerman's injuries were minor.

Zimmerman is (in)famous as the man who shot and killed unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin in 2012. A jury acquitted Zimmerman of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges, and the Department of Justice recently declined to pursue criminal civil rights charges against him.

Loose Cannons

Details are few at the moment. Both Lake Mary police and Zimmerman's attorney say that Zimmerman did not shoot, but instead another driver shot at him. Helicopter footage of the scene afterward showed Zimmerman's truck being towed with what appeared to be bullet holes in the passenger's side window. It's unclear whether Zimmerman's injury was the result of the bullet, or shattered glass.

Authorities also report the Zimmerman knew the shooter and has possibly had contact with him the in past. The shooter is cooperating with police, and it's unclear whether he will face attempted murder and/or related gun charges.

On the Road Rage Again

Since Zimmerman was acquitted in Martin's killing, he's had several run-ins with law enforcement. Authorities have been called in at least three domestic incidents involving his estranged wife, girlfriend, and ex-girlfriend. Each time, the victim declined to pursue charges against Zimmerman.

And this is not Zimmerman's first road rage incident: in September 2014 Zimmerman threatened to kill another driver, asking "Do you know who I am?" before saying, "I'll (f***ing) kill you." That driver also did not want to press charges.

Zimmerman's shooting of Martin garnered national media attention, on both the case itself and on Florida's controversial "stand your ground" law. Zimmerman has been in the media spotlight, and on law enforcement's radar it seems, ever since.
