George Soros' Ex-Girlfriend Sues Billionaire for Breaking Promise
She may officially be George Soros' ex-girlfriend, but 28-year-old Brazilian soap star Adriana Ferreyr isn't ready to let go of the financial perks associated with the relationship.
In a lawsuit filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, Ferreyr claims that twice during her five year romance with the 80-year-old billionaire businessman and liberal financier, he promised to buy her a New York City apartment.
Who thinks he has whisper similar things to other young ladies around the world?
The lawsuit claims that, in 2009, Ferreyr told George Soros that she was worried about not being able to afford her dream home. He allegedly told her that he would buy the home in the name of his company because all he wanted was to "make her happy."
After buying the home, the New York Times reports that the pair broke up.
And then got back together again, at which time Soros explained that he had given the apartment to his other girlfriend.
Adriana Ferreyr then went back for more, reviving the relationship yet again, allegedly leading to another promise of an apartment.
In addition to alleging all sorts of emotional trauma, the Times reports that lawsuit is seeking $50 million, and claims that Soros "breached his multiple promises, which were reasonably relied upon by Ferreyr to her detriment."
This argument is known as promissory estoppel.
Basically, when Party A makes a promise that he should reasonably have expected to induce Party B into action, and Party B does take action, then Party B is said to have justifiably relied on the promise of Party A.
If Party B also suffered substantial detriment, such as economic loss, then Party B may recover from Party A.
In other words, as George Soros' ex-girlfriend, Adriana Ferreyr may be entitled to a chunk of change if she can show that, despite their tumultuous relationship, it was reasonable for her to have gone ahead and expended money to find an apartment.
