Ford, Mazda Announce Massive Recalls

Ford Motor Co. and Mazda Motor Corp. announced massive recalls affecting almost 5 million vehicles this week. The recalls were due to separate issues with door latches and hatches on ten different models of vehicles built over the last three years.

Here's what you need to know about the affected vehicles and how to comply with the recall.

Ford Fixing Things

Ford is recalling some 2.4 million cars, SUVs, and vans in the U.S. due to an issue with malfunctioning side door latches which can prevent a door from properly closing or even opening while driving. "In the affected vehicles, the pawl spring tab in the side door latch could break," the car company said in a statement. "A door latch with a fractured pawl spring tab typically results in a 'door-will-not-close' condition."

The recall covers the 2013-15 Ford C-MAX and Ford Escape, 2012-15 Ford Focus, 2015 Ford Mustang and Lincoln MKC, and 2014-16 Ford Transit Connect. At this point, Ford says it is aware of just one accident and only three injuries related to the door latch issue, and dealers will replace the faulty door latches for free. Mazda Making It Right

On the other side, Mazda is recalling 2.2 million vehicles globally, including around 759,000 cars and crossovers in the U.S., after it found that supports on a rear door hatch that could fail, causing the hatch to fall on and injure people. According to the car company, factories applied insufficient corrosion protection coating to the hatch lift supports, causing them to corrode and break over time and exposure to water containing road salt.

Mazda's recall covers certain 2010-2013 Mazda3 cars, 2012-2015 Mazda 5 vans as well as some CX-5 and CX-3 crossovers from the 2016 model year. Mazda reported no injuries or accidents related to the problem, and, like Ford, will replace the lift supports for free. Check out Mazda's recall page to see if your car is affected.
