Ex-Yankee Chuck Knoblauch Charged With Choking Wife

Chuck Knoblauch (inset), the ex-New York Yankees second baseman, was arrested by Houston police on Friday night on felony domestic violence charges accusing him of assaulting his wife Stacey by choking her, causing "redness around her neck and swelling near her eye."

The couple, who have a 5-year-old son together, are in the midst of divorce proceedings.

Houston Police Officer Rebecca Sosa stated that Knoblauch's wife Stacey Victoria Stelmach told her that Knoblauch:

...struck her with his hand on her face and then choked her with his hand by applying pressure to her neck with his hand...caus[ing] her pain."

Significantly, Knoblauch faces third-degree felony charges for choking a family member that could land him 2 - 10 years in a Texas prison and a $10,000 penalty.

According to Donna Hawkins, a spokesperson for the Harris County District Attorney's office, choking a family member became a new felony in Texas.on September 1, 2009.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Harris County prosecutor Kari Allen told Judge Hazel Jones that Knoblauch assaulted his wife during an argument after "drinking heavily and taking...Xanax," and that a family friend witnessed the ex-Yankee beat, punch and choke his wife."

The former Yankee was in the news last year when he testified behind closed doors before a House committee investigating baseball players' use of steroids and other performance enhancing drugs.  Knoblauch was named in The Mitchell Report as one of a number of Yankees who allegedly used human growth horman (HGH) while playing for the team.

The report stated that Knoblauch paid Kirk Radomski, the Yankees' former assistant strength coach, for HGH supplied by Brian McNamee, a former personal trainer for a number of Yankees, and allegedly did so by giving checks to former Yankees reliever Jason Grimsley.
