Enrolling Now: Comprehensive California Family Law Training
If you have just hung your shingle out there as a California family lawyer, or are planning on doing so, The Rutter Group's CFLR is offering a three-day seminar that can teach you and your staff the ins and outs of California family practice: Basic Training: Family Law. Experienced practitioners and their support staff can benefit by learning the current best practices and procedures from leading experts in the field and the current Supervising Judge of the Los Angeles County Court Family Law Division. (Disclosure: The Rutter Group is FindLaw's sister company.)
The course will walk participants through a divorce, from before it even starts to after it's finished. And like real cases, the course starts from the point of a client's first contact and ends with handling post-judgment matters. CFLR is offering the course in Costa Mesa, California, in October 2017 on the 6th, 7th, and 8th, at the Westin South Coast Plaza (just a short drive from Huntington Beach and Newport Beach, so bring the family).
Can One Course Make You a California Family Lawyer?
In reality, if you're a California lawyer, all you need to do is get a family law client, and you'll be a family law lawyer. However, taking on a legal issue you aren't prepared to take on is like packing a parachute using directions you found on the internet. The Rutter Group's course will earn you 18 MCLE credits, including 1.5 credit hours in legal ethics, while providing you with live instruction on how to handle each part of a family law case.
The course provides guidance on how to initiate a matter on behalf of a petitioner and how to respond as the respondent's representative. Specific issues covered include emergency petitions and child custody matters. The course covers discovery in these matters, including your fiduciary duties, and other duties related to obtaining and providing the required and necessary evidence. Also, the course teaches critical trial preparation and alternative dispute resolution strategies and practices. Again, the course takes you through the full process, so you'll even delve into questions about how to enforce judgments and how to make post-judgment motions.
Course Perks
In addition to the course itself, participants can purchase The Rutter Group's related, industry-leading guides for half price: The Rutter Group's California Practice Guide: Family Law, and California Practice Guide: Family Law FORMS. And if you add the 50% discount on these texts plus the one year free of DissoMaster, this seminar is packed full of more value than it even costs to attend. Even if you opt to not use DissoMaster, nor purchase the guides, the course is less than $1,000, which is an amount you can easily recoup in the first retainer on your first divorce client.
