Dunkin Donuts Robbers Get Dough: Steal Donuts by Mistake

Three donut robbers are currently behind bars in Hyannis, Massachusetts after getting busted for trying to hold up a local Dunkin' Donuts.

Unfortunately for the men, aged 19 to 21, instead of making off with a bag of dough, they made off with a bag of donuts.

Indeed, the only green inside the stolen bag probably belonged to the sprinkles.

According to police, the three men, Nicholas Mercurio, Lukas Peterson, and Charles Iliffe, entered the Dunkin' Donuts after 9 p.m., masked and armed with knives.

Oh, and they also had a hatchet.

Believing that an employee was carrying the day's deposit, the Cape Cod Times reports that they demanded a paper bag from her purse.

It was filled with donuts--not cash.

They didn't figure it out until after they left the shop.

The donut robbers are now being charged with armed robbery while masked, notes the paper.

Massachusetts armed robbery law is interesting in that it directly addresses whether a defendant was masked during his crime. Robbers who distort or cover their facial features must be sentenced to at least 5 years in prison, whereas there is no mandatory minimum for unmasked robbers unless they used specific weapons.

In other news, this may not have been the first time these men hit the robbery circuit.

The area has experienced two other similar robberies in the last week according to the Cape Code Times. They also involved masked men, and, collectively, their locations seem to point to an interesting pattern:

Liquor store, Domino's Pizza and Dunkin' Donuts.

Could it be that the donut robbers are really serial robbers?
