'Don't Say Velcro' IH Legal Team Music Video Goes Viral

In what certainly appears to be the best video ever released by a legal team, the brilliant minds over at Velcro are starting to go viral, at least in IP and trademark circles. Their song and music video, "Don't Say Velcro" is nothing short of epic, and soon to be the anthem of every in-house trademark attorney.

The brilliance of the song is that it accurately explains the dilemma that in-house lawyers at the most popular companies have to deal with: The never ending flow of cease and desist letters they have to send out due to trademark violations.

The Curse of Popularity

Velcro is one of the few companies that enjoys the benefit of their brand name being synonymous in popular culture with the product they manufacturer and sell. Like Kleenex, Clorox, and Band-Aid, these companies have done such a good job with marketing their products that not only does the public regularly call tissues, bleach, and bandages, Kleenex, Clorox, and Band-Aids, so do competitors, marketers, and others who can potentially dilute the trademark.

The singing legal team pleads with the public to stop using the name of their product and instead call it "hook and loop" as it is technically and correctly known. The song explains that they are doing so in order to hopefully spread awareness that people are just making their jobs repetitive, and by continuing to call things like Velcro shoes, Velcro shoes, their trademark "will get killed."

Great, So Now I Have to Dance?

The good news for you in-house counsel out there is that only a handful of the Velcro in-house lawyer team was actually part of the video production, and none had very significant roles. Rather, a team of professional funny internet video makers were hired to produce and shoot the hilarious, corporate PSA. So breathe easy, your company probably doesn't want you to sing and dance on video on their behalf, even if it would be funny.
