Does Your Law Firm Support SOPA?

[1/17/2011 Editor's note: The original House Judiciary Committee's list of SOPA supporters has recently been updated. The committee's website now features an entirely new list of SOPA supporters. This new list does not include any of the law firms listed in this post.]

If you haven't heard about the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), then get your head out of the sand. The bill, which is currently making its way through committee, gives copyright and trademark holders the ability to cut off access to infringing websites.

And if your firm does any work for the media or entertainment industry, you can bet that they've heard about SOPA.

Some call it censorship, others think it protects American jobs. And a group of technology heavyweights thinks it stifles innovation. But what does your law firm think of SOPA?

According to a list released by the House Judiciary Committee, the following 22 law firms support the bill:

  1. Baker & Hostetler LLP
  2. Covington & Burling LLP
  3. Cowan, DeBaets, Abrahams & Sheppard LLP
  4. Cowan, Liebowitz & Latman, P.C
  5. Davis Wright Tremaine LLP
  6. Irell & Manella LLP
  7. Jenner & Block LLP
  8. Kelley Drye & Warren LLP
  9. Kendall Brill & Klieger LLP
  10. Kinsella Weitzman Iser Kump & Aldisert LLP
  11. Lathrop & Gage LLP
  12. Loeb & Loeb LLP
  13. Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp LLP
  14. Morrison & Foerster LLP
  15. Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP
  16. Phillips Nizer LLP
  17. Proskauer Rose LLP
  18. Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi LLP
  19. Shearman & Sterling LLP
  20. Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP
  21. Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP
  22. White & Case LLP

After a little research, it's clear why these law firms support SOPA. The smaller firms all serve the entertainment, media and fashion industries. The larger ones do, too.

Skadden has represented the numerous professional sports leagues for years. The same goes for Convington. The National Football League and Major League Baseball are also on the list of SOPA supporters.

MoFo represents Disney/ABC, EMI Music Publishing and Sony Music. They are also included on the list.

If your firm is on the list, it's probably just pandering to clients.
