Diddy Arrested for Assault With a Deadly Weapon
Parents are often very protective of their children. It's natural.
However, Sean "Diddy" Combs took that protective instinct too far, and it landed him in jail. The media mogul was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon recently after an altercation with one of his son's football coaches at UCLA.
Helicopter Dad
According to reports, Diddy was unhappy about the way UCLA football strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi was treating Diddy's son Justin. The father went to UCLA to confront the coach. Here the stories became conflicting.
Some sources report that Alosi was on the phone and told Diddy to wait. Diddy was infuriated by the non-VIP treatment. He picked up a kettlebell and swung it at Alosi, narrowly missing his head.
According to Diddy's representatives, he acted in self-defense. Another source claims that Diddy forced his way to Alosi's office after Alosi refused to see him. While there, Diddy refused to leave and threatened to call police. Somehow, Alosi allegedly snapped and rushed at Diddy. Diddy apparently had no choice but to reach for a kettlebell, holding it in a defensive position, for self defense.
Whose story do you believe? Diddy was arrested and charged with three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, one count of making terrorist threats, and one count of battery. He was released after posting $50,000 bail.
Deadly Weapon
While it's unclear what exactly happened during the altercation, all reports seem to agree that a kettlebell was involved, hence the deadly weapon enhancement. When most people hear deadly weapon, they think guns, knives, or bombs. However, innocuous and harmless objects could be considered deadly weapons as well.
California law defines a deadly weapon as objects that, "while not deadly per se, may be used, under certain circumstances, in a manner likely to produce death or great bodily injury." A kettlebell swung at someone's head could definitely crack a skull. However, more innocent things such as a pencil or screwdriver could also be considered deadly weapons when used to attempt to stab someone in the eye. In some cases, a fist could even be a deadly weapon.
If convicted of assault with a deadly weapon, Diddy could face anywhere between one years and 4 years in prison for each charge.
