College's Man Bun Ban Is More Than Words: Hairstyle Too Extreme
Students strumming acoustic ballads on BYU-Idaho's campus are going to have to get a haircut -- the school's paper is reporting that the Honor Office has banned the man bun. The popular male hairstyle featuring a top knot of long hair is apparently too reminiscent of early '90s glam metal rockers.
Student Services & Activities Vice President Kevin Miyasaki told the paper, "As part of the dress and grooming code, we commit to avoid extreme hairstyles. A 'man-bun' would be considered not consistent with this standard."
What Would You Do If My Hair Was Torn in Two?
The Student Honor Office describes the reasoning behind the school's dress and grooming standards:
By living the dress and grooming standards consistent with the teachings of Jesus Christ we show modesty, obedience, self-respect and create a wholesome and professional environment. We also invite virtue, respect and the presence of the Holy Ghost.
Although it says "man" right in the title, the bun ban was apparently enforced against both male and female students. While students who reported to the BYU-Idaho Testing Center with "hair shaved on the sides of the head with a top-knot worn in the middle" were allowed to take their tests, their hairstyles were reported to the Student Honor Office.
What Would You Say If I Took That Hair Away?
Now that the school has tried to talk to students and make them understand, it is encouraging them to be part of the enforcement process. And they seem cool with it. Junior Marivi Lugo told The Scroll, "I think there's a difference between being stylish and appropriate. We have an honor code for a reason, and if we don't have people enforcing it, then what's the point of the Honor Code?"
In this case, the school may be saving its male students from themselves. A survey says that most women hate the man bun and wouldn't date a man wearing one. And recent research says the style may cause men to go bald.
Know this gents -- before you go getting your hair in a bunch -- it takes more than hair to show you feel that your love for monster ballads is real.
