Client, Going to Pick Up a File, Shoots His Lawyer to Death
An Indiana man shot and killed his lawyer while picking up a file at the attorney's house.
The shooter, an 83-year-old man, was a client in a civil case. According to reports, the attorney and his client were also long-time friends.
Police said they didn't know why the client killed T. Edward Page. Neither did the lawyer.
Retiring Defender
Page, 64, had worked as a Lake County public defender the last ten years. He had submitted his notice of retirement days before the shooting.
According to reports, the suspect went to the attorney's house to pick up documents. The client shot Page, and then the lawyer's husband tackled the man and disarmed him.
Police described the incident at a press conference, but did not release the suspect's name or a motive. They also expressed condolences for those who knew Page as an attorney and a part-judge.
"Judge Page was a well-respected judge, attorney and resident of Hobart, and he will be sorely missed by all," said Lt. James Gonzalez.
Former Prosecutor
Page started his career as a prosecutor, and became the first criminal court commissioner in Lake County. The position evolved to magistrate judge, and Page went on to teach classes at the National Judicial College.
After becoming a regular faculty member this year, he planned to retire from law practice this month. Colleagues said he had a significant impact on the criminal justice system.
"There are things done in criminal cases that are done that way because Ted did it that way," said defense attorney Tom Vanes.
