CLE: Joint International Law Conference Set for April

The American Society of International Law (ASIL) and the International Law Association (ILA) are coming together for their first ever joint conference, scheduled for April 7 to 12, 2014, in Washington, D.C.

The joint conference will comprise both ASIL's Annual Meeting and ILA's Biennial Conference. Based on the theme of "the effectiveness of international law," the conference will address such topics as how to maximize the effectiveness of international law, the role of international courts, and the effect of non-governmental actors, according to the ASIL's website.

For ASIL or ILA members, the early bird rate of $405 is extended until February 7. Non-members will pay $565. After February 7, the rate will be $480 for members and $650 for non-members.

Notable Programs

In addition to workshops and panels, a select number of sessions qualify for CLE credits, according to ASIL. So D.C.-area lawyers can get a jump start on the next reporting period. The joint international law conference will have events at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in D.C.

Here are some notable sessions lawyers may want to check out:

  • The Internet and International Law;
  • The Approach of Courts to Foreign Affairs and National Security;
  • Everybody Come Together Over Me: Systematic Integration and Vienna Convention Article 31(3)(c);
  • Domestic Human Rights Enforcement After Kiobel;
  • The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform Act's Turn to International Law; and
  • The Effectiveness of the WTO in Dealing with Climate Change and Energy Initiatives.

Beyond the programs, attendees can work in "study groups" during the various open working sessions that'll give practitioners a chance to bounce ideas off of each other, according to ASIL.

Renowned Speakers

No international conference would be complete with an all-star lineup of speakers. ASIL and ILA's joint international law conference is no exception.

Featured speakers during the six-day event include:

  • Radhika Coomaraswamy, a former UN Special Representative of the Secretary General on Children and Armed Conflict and former UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women;
  • Alain Pellet, a Hudson Medal Winner; and
  • Sundaresh Menon, Chief Justice of Singapore.
