If you’re a patent lawyer looking for the ideal combination of continuing legal education credit (CLE) and Texas charm, you’re in luck. The University of Texas School of Law (UT Law) is hosting its 16th Annual Advanced Patent Law Institute October 27-28 in Austin, Texas.

Standard registration for the conference, which will be held at the Four Seasons Hotel, is $645. The registration rate increases to $695 after October 19. Registration can be completed online on UT Law’s CLE website.

The Patent Law Institute is geared toward in-house counsel and will include coverage of:

  • Recent developments in claims construction and claims drafting.
  • Cost savings in litigation.
  • Inequitable conduct after Therasense v. BD.
  • Indirect and joint infringement: recent cases and best practices in prosecution and litigation.
  • Damages: proofs, procedural issues and strategies.
  • The role of patent aggregators in the IP marketplace

Attorneys will also have opportunities to interact with judicial and government officials. On Thursday, October 27, the conference will include a judicial panel discussion about managing, hearing, and trying patent cases with U.S. District Judges Leonard Davis, Arthur Boylan, and Jeff Kaplan. Friday, October 28, the conference will start with a discussion entitled, "Patent Quality and Pendency Initiatives at the USPTO" featuring James Dwyer from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

The Advanced Patent Law Institute is approved for 12.5 hours of CLE credit in Texas and California, including 2.75 hours of ethics credits. A Certificate of Completion, and related course reporting documentation for CLE credit will be available at the conference.

Many other jurisdictions accept UT Law courses for CLE credit; check with your state bar association if you are licensed in a different state, and you want to receive credit for this conference.
