City Attorney Fears Assassination by Florida Police
When the cops are in the car behind you, a little paranoia is a good thing.
You slow down, make sure you signal when changing lanes, think about where you put your registration. It's all good.
But if you think the police are coming to kill you, that's another thing. City Attorney Grant Alley believes he has that problem.
Assassination Plot
According to reports, the Fort Myers city attorney told investigators he feared city police would kill him for exposing corruption in the department.
"Mr. Alley stated that there is a 'conspiracy' and 'organized effort' that 'originated with certain members of the police department that protect malfeasance and silence the forces needed to correct it,'" investigators said. "Mr. Alley emphatically stated that he was in fear of his safety and his family's safety and expressed fear of being shot as a result..."
The Fort Myers News-Press revealed the internal investigation after reporting that police allegedly were tipping off drug dealers about search warrants. But the investigation disclosed general dysfunction in the city attorney's office.
A law firm, hired by the city, recommended discipline against Alley for inappropriate behavior towards his staff. The firm said Alley engaged in "overly aggressive and unprofessional verbal and written communications" with co-workers, and that the problems have gotten worse in recent months.
Real Concerns
Alley has been on administrative leave since August, while the city council has deliberated over the issue. At recent meeting, Councilman Johnny Streets said the problems between the city attorney and the police department have been brewing for some time.
Streets, a retired Fort Myers police sergeant, said members of the police department have not cooperated with the city attorney. Streets said Alley has real concerns about his safety.
"I'm concerned about a lot of things this police department may or may not be doing," he said. "I don't trust the police department. I don't trust the leadership, and that's sad."
