Best Way to Avoid a Ticket: Rock, Paper, Scissors

By Christopher Coble, Esq. on April 16, 2015 | Last updated on March 21, 2019

We've all heard stories about lying about cancer to avoid speeding tickets, sucking on pennies to fool a breathalyzer, or blaming a car accident on your coffee-drinking pet parrot. Nobody wants to get in trouble with the law, and we'll go to great lengths to avoid criminal liability.

But beating a cop at rock, paper, scissors to get out of an underage drinking ticket? That's a new one. And apparently it's effective -- just check out this video:

I Fought the Law...

The identity of this festival folk hero is unknown, but comments on the Vine below indicate the battle royale happened at last weekend's Chilifest in Snook, Texas. One young adult was allegedly doing what many young adult attendees allegedly do at music festivals: enjoying one or more adult beverages.

Accounts vary on whether she was going to be cited or arrested for possessing alcohol as a minor, and it's also unclear whose idea it was to Ro-Sham-Bo for freedom. What we do know is who won:

Just look at the joy and relief on our young protagonist's face, and the jubilation in her fellow festival-goers. It's not often you can go toe-to-toe with Johnny Law and come out on the winning side.

And the Rock Won.

Unfortunately for the three officers involved, that's not the end of the story. While the officers and their respective police departments are not identified, College Station's KBTX is reporting that Burleson County Precinct 2 Constable Dennis Gaas confirmed the incident, passed on the information to their superiors, and banned the officers from working future Chilifests. This seems a bit excessive, since at least one officer has to live with the viral video evidence and shame of losing a hand game to a drunk kid.

That drunk kid was fortunate. A minor in possession charge can be expensive and, in some cases, cost you your driver's license. And of all the ways college kids can get arrested, alcohol crimes are chief among them. So hopefully this young woman enjoys her freedom and savors her victory.

The lesson, as always: throw rock.
