Behind on Bar Prep? 3 Tips to Help

By George Khoury, Esq. on June 17, 2019

Being behind on bar prep can feel incredibly overwhelming, but no matter how far behind you are, you still have a chance. Even the most woefully unprepared law grads have managed to sit for and pass even the California bar

The schedules set by most bar review courses are nearly impossible to fully keep up with, even though keeping with the course’s pace ensures that you'll get through the material that was specifically designed to help exam-takers pass the bar. However, if you still have some time before the exam, you can devote some of it to catching up on the bar prep you missed. Here are three tips on how to catch up.

Take Control of Your Schedule

While you may want to stick to your bar prep course's schedule, if you know your learning style well enough, you might want to consider creating your own schedule and doing bar prep your own way, like this person did.

If you want to stick to your course's schedule and just need to catch up, however, take a second look at your bar prep course's full-time schedule. You'll notice that their schedule doesn't really have anything on the weekends, more than maybe an hour or two of review. While you may sacrifice some rest and relaxation, you can easily put in more than a half day each weekend day until you’re caught up.

Speed It Up

If you're really looking to crunch your time and have the luxury of having all your lectures available electronically, then you can speed up playback to 1.5x or even 2.0x the normal speed. Resist the urge to stop the lecture for any reason, whether it's for taking notes, or a trip to the kitchen or commode. Just sit back, listen, and absorb (and maybe take notes if you feel like it’s absolutely necessary).

Get Support

Don't be afraid to hire help if you’re running short on time. If you can afford it, hire a maid to clean, sign up for a premium food delivery service, or even pay for taxis or ride-shares to take you to the places you would normally drive, so that you can keep studying and not use your time when you don't have to.
