Before 'Pawn Stars' Wedding, Does Rick Harrison Need a Prenup?
For Rick Harrison of "Pawn Stars" fame, his third wedding will (hopefully) be the charm. But does he need a prenup?
It's been about a year since Harrison proposed to girlfriend DeAnne Burditt, but their wedding date and venue have finally been nailed down. Originally, the couple had planned a wedding in Las Vegas. But plans have changed, and now they'll tie the knot in California on July 21, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Harrison has been married twice before, and has three children from his previous marriages. So does he need a prenuptial agreement this time around?
There's little detail available about Burditt's net worth, but what's known is that she works in a law office. Harrison's net worth is estimated at $5 million.
That's a huge chunk of change. His reality series is the No. 1 show on the History Channel, and has been around for six seasons.
They say that third time's the charm but for someone who has been divorced, there's probably little doubt that Harrison should be investing some time and money into getting a prenuptial agreement.
Nevada, where Harrison lives, is a community property state. Under those laws, any assets accumulated by either spouse during the marriage is deemed to belong to both spouses 50/50, unless otherwise provided.
So once Harrison officially gets married (again), half of the wealth he accumulates through his pawn shop and TV gigs will legally belong to Burditt until death (or divorce) do they part.
How could a prenup play into the marriage? Among other things, a prenup can state that one spouse's earnings are to belong to that spouse. Whether a court would enforce that upon divorce depends on the facts and circumstances, as well as state law. For example, some issues like child custody and support cannot be predetermined in a prenup.
As Rick Harrison's "Pawn Stars" wedding plans move forward, let's hope the third time really is the charm for the reality star and his bride-to-be.
