Beer Recall: Sierra Nevada Recalls 12-Oz Bottles

Drinkers of craft beer, take note: Sierra Nevada has issued a recall for the Midwest, East Coast, and the South on many of their popular 12-oz bottled beers. Fortunately, the recall is focused on a rather short production window, and the bottles and packaging are made in such a way that spotting a recalled Sierra Nevada is rather simple. So far, there have been no reported injuries.

Basically, there is a defect in the way one of their bottling plants was bottling their beverages. The defect could cause a little bit of the top to break off into the beer, exposing drinkers to potentially drinking broken glass, as well as flat beer.

States and Beers Affected

As a preliminary matter, the following states are affected:

Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Colombia.

And, the following beers are affected:

Pale Ale, Torpedo Extra IPA, Tropical Torpedo, Sidecar Orange Pale Ale, Beer Camp Golden IPA, Otra Vez, Nooner, and Hop Hunter IPA.

How to Spot a Recalled Sierra Nevada

Spotting one of the above Sierra Nevada beers subject to the recall is simple. Each bottle has an alpha-numeric series of characters that basically tells you the production date and facility. For example, if the bottle says 010203M1515, then it means that the bottle was filled on January 2, 2003 at the Mills facility, at 3:15pm. Boxes and packaging also contain the same codes.

The letter in the middle is very important for recall purposes as only the Mills facility is affected. So if there's a "M" on your bottle, you will want to make sure the numbers before it, the date, do not fall between December 5, 2016 and January 13, 2017.

What to Do If You Bought Recalled Sierra Nevada

If you purchased Sierra Nevada that is subject to the recall, the company is advising customers to not drink the beers. Instead, customers are advised to throw out the beers and to use the brewer's website to submit a form for reimbursement.
