Administrative Professionals Day Is a Thing. Get to Know It.

I remember my first year as an associate at BigLaw. I had my own office, and I shared an admin -- I hit the big time! But with admins, come responsibilities my dear young newbie associates; and one of those responsibilities are upon us -- Administrative Professionals' Day.

Yes, that's a thing. And it's next Wednesday, April 23.

Here's how to figure out whom to gift, and what to gift on Administrative Professionals Day. Ask yourself the following questions:

1. Do you have an admin?

If yes, then you need to get your admin a gift. If no, get outta here (just kidding, that will affect our bounce rate, please keep reading).

2. Do you share your admin?

If no, then easy, it's all up to you to get the gift for your admin. If yes, then who else does he report to? If you share your admin with another newbie associate, you young lawyers may want to team up and get a coordinated gift.

If you share your admin with a partner, then we suggest giving your own gift and foregoing a tag-team gift with the partner. The partner (a) probably has a much bigger budget; (2) gives the admin much more work, which equals a bigger gift; and (3) is way, way too busy to discuss the matter with you.

Ok, now that you've sorted that out, here are some simple gift ideas for your admin.

1. Lunch

If you can spare the time (darn you billable hours), why not take your admin out to lunch to one of those fancy places you take (or used to take) summer associates? If you decide to go that route, clear both of your schedules in advance, just in case the partner you share your admin with has similar plans. Oh, and if so, the partner gets first pick of the day.

2. Tokens of Appreciation

Boxes of chocolate, other sweets, or flowers are always a nice way to brighten up someone's day. Just don't give your admin the same thing you did for the holidays -- try to switch it up a little.

3. Spa Gift

Who doesn't like to relax? A gift certificate to a spa is always welcome, and with services geared to both men and women, everyone's happy.

While there's no strict amount you should spend, the elaborateness of the gift will depend on how much work you give your admin. The main point is to show appreciation, so whatever you do, don't forget to say "Thank you!"
