5 Tasks to Outsource When You Hit the Big Time

If you're one of the lucky, employed lawyers making a good salary, congratulations. Now it's time to spread the wealth.

We're not talking about donations to charities or handouts to the poor. Both are admirable, but this blog is called Greedy Associates. Altruism has a place, just not here.

Or at least, not in this post.

No, we're talking about hiring help to make your life easier. So without further adieu, here are the five tasks you should outsource when you start making money.

  1. Taxes. You didn't choose law because you were good at math. Unless you're a tax lawyer, you probably have no idea how to do your taxes. Your first treat to yourself should be hiring an accountant to help you avoid the spring income tax filing unpleasantness.
  2. Housekeeping. Cleaning your own space is awful. And it takes FOREVER. You have to tidy, and dust, and vacuum, and take breaks to catch up on all the episodes of Suits you missed over the last month. Just cleaning your living room could take six hours. Or your could hire cleaners. The first time you enter a clean home after a long day at work may end up being the greatest day of your life. So hire someone, already. You'll thank us later.
  3. Laundry. You could attempt to separate your colors from your whites and treat the mystery stains on your sheets. Or you could bag everything and take it to the cleaners. Many dry cleaners also offer fluff-and-fold service by the pound. Drop off your laundry on your way to work; pick it up -- folded -- two days later. What could be easier?
  4. Petcare. Your furry friends are one of the greatest sources of joy in your life. Return the favor. If you work long hours -- and who doesn't? -- hire a dog walker. And if you're a cat person (ugh), find a sitter who you can rely on in a pinch. Even if you can handle day-to-day care on your own, you can still pay a groomer to keep your four-legged family members look spiffy.
  5. Car Maintenance. Your parents made you learn how to change the oil in a car before they ever let you hit the road. You own jumper cables. You can change a battery. Who cares? A professional can perform maintenance tasks way faster than you can. Why don't you keep your hands client and outsource the work?

If you're one of the best-paid litigators in the country, you can afford fancy perks like a valet and a personal chef. But if you're just starting to earn disposable income, start small by outsourcing relatively inexpensive tasks that eat up your free time.
