3 Tips to Land That Post-Bar Exam Job

For those of you that just finished the bar exam, first and foremost, congratulations! Just getting through law school and the exam is a feat in and of itself.

But, the real world is likely calling for most of you, and there are bills, responsibilities, and most of all, the looming (and potentially devastating) student loan payments. Basically, once your feet land back on solid ground after your post bar vacation, you need to start aggressively job hunting, if you're not already employed as a legal professional.

Below are three tips to get you going.

1. Do EVERYTHING You Can

There are a lot of different paths to landing your dream legal job, but they're all pretty similar. Your law school, or another law school in your area, likely has a tip sheet on resources to use to land a job after graduation.

Do everything they recommend. And remember, before you even have your license in hand (and even after), getting hired anywhere, or even getting an interview, can be a real challenge. Don't get discouraged. Keep trying. The right fit is out there.

Along the way to your dream legal job, you're probably going to have to spend a lot of time doing other work. Don't be afraid of trying a field of law you might not be too excited about, especially post-bar. Getting some experience under your belt, and being employed, will make you that much more employable by your dream-employer. While legal volunteer work does look good on your resume, getting paid for legal work looks even better.

3. Be Flexible, Geographically

As Above the Law recommends, being flexible with where you live can really improve your chances of landing your dream job, in your dream location, down the road. Though, it's worth noting that ATL advises staying away from moving to the suburbs, but rather finding other bigger cities.
